Florfenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It belongs to the phenicol class of antibiotics. It is a thiamphenicol derivative with the same mechanism of action as chloramphenicol (inhibition of protein synthesis). However, it is more active than either chloramphenicol or thiamphenicol.
Spectrum of Activity:
Florfenicol has a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity that includes all organisms sensitive to chloramphenicol, gram-negative bacilli, gram-positive cocci, and other atypical bacteria such as mycoplasma. This wide range of coverage makes it a versatile antibiotic in the treatment of bacterial infections in poultry.
Indications:
Florfenicol is indicated for the treatment and prevention of respiratory and intestinal infections caused by susceptible bacteria in poultry. It is particularly effective against common poultry pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp, Clostridium spp, Mycoplasma spp, Haemophilus spp, Pasteurella spp, Proteus spp, Staphylococcus spp, Streptococcus spp and other gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Florfenicol is effective against Fowl Typhoid, Paratyphoid, Fowl Cholera, Necrotic Enteritis, Infectious Coryza, Omphalitis, Endocarditis, Bumble Foot and Yolk Sac Infections.
Mechanism of Action:
Florfenicol inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing the formation of peptide bonds and interfering with the bacterial growth and reproduction process. Florfenicol is highly lipophilic, which provides high enough concentrations to treat intracellular pathogens and cross some anatomic barriers.
Dosage and Administration:
Prevention: 1 ml per 4 liter of drinking water for 3-5 days. Treatment: 1 ml per 2 liter of drinking water for 3-5 days. Precautions:
Store at controlled room temperature (15-30°C). Keep away from the reach of children.
Protect from heat, light and moisture. Store at cold and dry places.
Shake well before use.
